Winemaker's Notes:

We love the precision and balance of Kabinett Riesling. Like a sensational rollercoaster, this Riesling launches with a burst of sweetness before being engulfed by vibrant acidity which delivers length and balance on the finish. It brims with flavours of old-fashioned lemonade, key lime and honeysuckle. Beautiful focus and purity are thanks to its single vineyard designation, Anandale Farm, based in the coastal Blind River sub-region of Marlborough. We like to drink this wine while cooking a meal, as an aperitif that whets the palate.

Reviews:

2023 Vintage:

95 Points – Outstanding "There’s nothing but purity of variety and fruit as the scents touch the nose, aromas of apricot stone and lemon, white fleshed fruits and blossoms. The pristine quality that the bouquet presents also showcases a mineral quality of wet stone and fresh water stream. Elderflower and lime-flower, lemonade lemons and white apricot. Off-dry on the palate with a lush sweetness, high-acidity and a core of flavours that mirror the bouquet. Youthful, fresh, vibrant and plush. A delicious wine with best drinking from 2023 through 2030+." Cameron Douglas MS

94 Points "An initial hint of sweetness is perfectly balanced by mouth-watering acidity giving the wine an exquisite sweet-sour tension. Flavours of lime zest, oyster shell and lemon curd give good varietal definition 27/9/2023" Bob Campbell MW

2022 Vintage:

94 points - Excellent "A very elegant bouquet with soft white flowers then apple, a deep core of minerality and citrus fruits. Off-dry on the palate with a satin texture and
gentle sweetness, contrasting acidity, core fruit flavours reflect the bouquet led by apple then citrus and finishing with mineral and flowers. Balanced, well made and ready to drink from 2022 through 2030." Cameron Douglas MS

94 points "A classic Marlborough riesling in a medium-dry style with lime cordial, grapefruit, white rose and oyster shell flavours. Single-vineyard wine from the coastal Blind River sub-region. Nice sweet/sour tension. 15/9/2022" Bob Campbell MW

93 points "The 2022 Riesling Anandale Farm is Blank Canvas’ first varietal bottling from the vineyard, a cool, exposed site giving huge acidity. It’s a delightfully perfumed, delicate kabinett-style Riesling (27 g/L) with 9% alcohol. Homemade lemonade meets green apple flesh and a floral blossom twist. The acidity leaves a refreshing finish that’s clean and vibrant but never austere. There’s lots of pleasure here, even in youth, but it has the substance to age gracefully." April 2023 Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous Media

2018 Vintage:

16.5 Points "First impression is super-intense and pure, ripe citrus – lemon and grapefruit on the nose. With just the merest adumbration of bottle age: something that has a savoury/mineral quality without anything as obvious as kerosene. That lemony intensity is equally marked on the palate, delicately scented with flowers (honeysuckle, the label fittingly suggests), clean-cut and perfectly balanced between the acid and the fruit sweetness, leaving the mouth clean on the finish. Intense and long and should continue to age well in bottle. It was good on its own and went very well with a range of lightly spiced vegetarian dishes from my very good/authentic local takeaway." Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com 27/01/22

93 Points / 4.5 Stars “From the Blind River vineyard in the Awatere Valley. A powerful riesling with lime, lemon zest and subtle mineral flavours. Low pH and assertive acidity balances around 23g/l of residual sugar and builds a lovely tension to give a medium-dry finish. An impressive wine that will develop well” Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review. 16/7/2018

18.0+ Points / 4 stars “Bright, very pale straw colour with slight green hues, near colourless on the rim.  The nose is fresh and delicate with taut and refined aromas of lime fruit, white florals and subtle notes of mouthwatering minerals at the core, revealing nuances of herbs.  The aromatics are youthfully pure with excellent clarity.  Medium in sweetness and light-bodied, the palate has delicate and subtle flavours of lime fruit, white florals with notes of honey and minerals.  The mouthfeel is thirst-quenching with crisp, lacy, brisk acidity and the wine flows along a fine line with good enery and tension, leading to a sustained, nuanced finish.  This is a delicately fruited medium Riesling with lime, floral and mineral flavours on a mouthwatering palate.  It will develop over the next 4-5+ years.  Match with Asian fare.  Hand-picked fruit from the ‘Anandale Farm’ vineyard, Blind River, Awatere, fermented in stainless-steel to 8.6 % alc. and 23 g/L RS, TA 8.7 g/L and pH 2.9.  18.0+/20″ Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, 15/11/18

4 stars “The pale lemon/green 2018 vintage (4*) is described on the label as a ‘kabinett’ style of Riesling. A single-vineyard, Awatere Valley wine, hand-harvested and bottled by June, it’s still a baby. Light-bodied (8.6 per cent alcohol) and gently sweet (23 grams/litre of residual sugar), with mouth-watering acidity, it has strong, lemony, appley flavours, showing very good delicacy and harmony, and obvious cellaring potential; open 2021+.” Michael Cooper’s Buyer’s Guide 2019, November 2018
