Reed Vineyard
Subregion: Waihopai Valley
Valley: Southern Valleys, Wairau Valley
Region: Marlborough
Grows: Chardonnay
Wine: Blank Canvas Reed Vineyard Chardonnay
Growers: Pete and Anne Reed
The Reeds have established themselves as formidable Chardonnay growers, converting their land at the mouth of the Waihopai Valley into vineyard in 2000. They have resisted the Sauvignon Blanc frenzy, choosing to remain loyal to Chardonnay and the gamble has paid off producing some of the most enviable high-quality Chardonnay in the region. Matt has worked with the Reeds for nearly 15 years, so we were delighted when Pete and Anne top-grafted some old Gewurztraminer vines over to Clone 95 Chardonnay for us in 2017. The vines are old and the roots go deep.
Soils and Climate: Low-vigour clay soils and a naturally dry micro-climate.
Vineyard: Pete and Anne live on the vineyard, tending to the vines daily.
