The Top Wineries of New Zealand List for 2024 was released by leading Australasian wine publication The Real Review on Monday. This year, 157 high-performing wineries representing 20% of the country’s total of 740 wineries made the list. 

We are extremely delighted to this year make the list’s coveted Top 20, officially claiming the 18^th position overall out of all New Zealand wineries, sitting alongside well-established names such as Felton Road (#1), Ata Rangi (#4), Craggy Range (#5) and Pyramid Valley (#11). According to the ranking, this therefore places Blank Canvas in the top few percent of New Zealand’s finest wine producers. This is an improvement of four places from last year’s #22 and inclusion in this year’s list means that Blank Canvas has made the list every year since its inception seven years ago.

Launched by Master of Wine Bob Campbell and Australian wine critic Huon Hooke in 2018, the annual list is decided based on the results of tasting several thousand wines blind. Campbell states, “Top Wineries of New Zealand 2024 is the who’s who of fine wine producers creating new benchmarks as a measure of excellence.” This year, Campbell’s tasting team doubled to include Wellington-based Master of Wine Stephen Wong, and together, more than 3,500 wines were reviewed over the assessment period. Wines were scored out of 100, and the results for each winery’s best wines were algorithmically used to determine the list of Top Wineries.

We’re honoured and overjoyed to make the Top 20 for the first time this year. Having started from ground zero in 2013 to being recognized among the top in the country today, is simply phenomenal and inspires us onward and upward.

We are firm believers that success and achievement results from a great deal of hard work, but also collaboration and partnership, We could not have got where we are without our incredible grower partners, and Aaron Zuccaro and team in the cellar, who put in huge effort to respect and help bring to fruition our fine wine vision for these special single vineyard parcels. 

It is great to see Marlborough’s quality focused producers recognized throughout the list, with four making the top 20. This importantly highlights that Marlborough, frequently called the juggernaut or the engine room of the industry, is most definitely capable of producing some of the top wines in the country. It is a very  exciting time.
