Tucked into the sun-drenched folds of the Omaka Valley, Settlement Vineyard is a jewel of the Southern Valleys, and home to our Blank Canvas Settlement Vineyard Pinot Noir. This hillside site is a masterclass in precision and potential, and we are privileged to work with a small, one-hectare parcel known as the Back Block.
Planted in 2009 to Clone 777 Pinot Noir, this north-facing slope is densely planted at 3,788 vines per hectare, encouraging natural competition and concentration. The result is a wine of structure, perfume, and unmistakable site expression.

Soil & Climate
Omaka is one of Marlborough’s warmest subregions, and this warmth combined with the vineyard’s clay-rich soil produces Pinot Noir with thick skins and abundant natural tannin. The hillside is composed of tightly packed wind-blown loess over low-vigour clay loams, offering excellent drainage and a firm foundation for vine balance.
These conditions yield fruit with depth, texture, and a natural tension, perfect for crafting a Pinot Noir that is both cerebral and sensuous.
Grower Philosophy
The vineyard is organically managed and BioGro certified, with conversion beginning in 2013. The steep slope and close planting mean much of the work is done by hand, with an emphasis on precision and care.
Behind Settlement Vineyard are the Sutherland, Healy, and Beattie families, supported by viticulturist Nigel Sowman. Their shared philosophy is rooted in sustainability, organics, and a singular focus: growing world-class Pinot Noir that speaks clearly of its place.
